Lighthouses and Harbours
A Lighthouse, pradīpāgāraya (ප්රදීපාගාරය) is a tall tower structure with a bright light at the top. The light is accessed by way of a winding spiral staircase that runs inside of the tower right from the bottom continuously to the top. Lighthouses are located to guide seafarers through dangerous locations at sea and used as navigation guides to travel over water, aiding boats of hazardous areas.
The lighthouses in Sri Lanka are operated and maintained by the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) with a few under the control of the Sri Lanka Navy. Today, only 14 out of 25 of these lighthouses are active. The main harbours are in Trincomalee, Galle, Hambantota and Colombo.
