Uda Walawe National Forest Reserve


The Udawalawe National Forest Reserve is located on the borders of Ratnapura-Moneragala districts and is situated in close proximity to the Uda Walawe reservoir and the Walawe Ganga. Uda Walawe reservoir can be reached by proceeding 3 km from the Uda Walawe junction on the Ratnapura-Embilipitiya road.


Trees and creepers endemic to the dry zone are found in this forest reserve. Large herds of elephants, deer, elk, wild buffalo and wild boar are a common sight. A large variety of birds, including the peacock, crane, seagulls, Kerala and various kinds of reptiles, can be observed in the reservoir. Among the other animals are the tortoise, monitor lizard and garden lizard.


The Dept. of Forest Conservation is responsible for the administration of the Reserve. It is possible to obtain transport and guide facilities at the entrance.
