THE PLACE
The 72nd Mile Post is a small but distinctive survivor from the old Colombo–Kandy road. It stands near Kandy Lake, between the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic precinct and Queen's Hotel. The stone marker records the road distance measured in miles from Colombo and belongs to the period when milestones were essential guides along the island's trunk roads. Its value lies in its original urban setting rather than in size or decoration.

The marker is beside a busy pedestrian and traffic area near Kandy Lake. View it from the pavement, take care when crossing roads and do not climb on or mark the stone.
