Algama Mahawaththa Ambalama

The Mahawatta Ambalama is a rectangular wayside rest of brick and mortar in the Medawatta area of Algama, on the Algama–Horagasmankada road in Kegalle District's Warakapola division. Nine pillars carry the structure — seven square, two cylindrical — under a roof clad in clay tiles (rata ulu), though the tiling is thought to be a later addition from recent renovation rather than the original roofing. It stands about 2.6 km along the Horagasmankada road from Algama, or roughly 4 km if approached from the Horagasmankada junction end.

It was built to shelter passing travellers free of charge, an act of goodwill known as a Pinkama — the same purpose ambalamas served across the island, which also served as places where news was exchanged among travellers. No date, builder, or founding event is recorded for this one; it is known only as ancient.
