Eighteenth century, Kandyan roof, four kilometres out of Yakkala, still doing its one job.

THE PLACE
An eighteenth-century wayside shelter on the Yakkala–Radawana road, with a Kandyan roof of semi-cylindrical Sinhala ulu. The Archaeological Department protected it in 2002.
Nobody has needed to stop here in a very long time. The road it stands on now carries people to places these builders had no word for, at speeds they had no concept of, and the shelter is still there, still free, still offering the same thing.
