Amunugama Ambalama

Amunugama Ambalama stands a few kilometers from Madawala, reached by turning off Madawala Road at the Amunugama Bus Stand and following the Amunugama–Walala Road roughly 450 meters through paddy fields. It is a small, square, open-sided shelter, its roof carried on four brick pillars, with low walls built to double as seating ledges. It is believed to be more than a century old, though no construction date or builder is recorded.

This ambalama is said to have served pilgrims traveling from Digana, Theldeniya, Menikhinna, and Kundasale on their way to the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy, including during the annual Esala Perahera. At some point its roof collapsed entirely, leaving only the four pillars standing; it has reportedly been restored since, though the details of that restoration are unclear. What remains is modest: a resting point on a paddy-field road, of a kind once common across Sri Lanka for pilgrims and travelers, most of which have long since fallen into disrepair or disappeared.
