Ancient Minipe Amuna over Mahaweli

The Minipe Amuna is a diversion structure built to draw river water into a canal system that carried it to the dry country lying to the east. It belongs to the long tradition of irrigation works associated with the Mahaweli region.

What stands at the site today is not simply the historic structure. Modern intervention has reshaped the setting, and later engineering is visible there now.
