Colombo turned its old asylum into a shopping arcade, and hardly anyone shopping there knows it.
STAND INSIDE IT — 360°
THE PLACE
A shopping arcade in a group of restored buildings beside Independence Square, built as part of the square's redevelopment.
One of those buildings was the Western Provincial Council. The other was the Jawatta Lunatic Asylum.
There is no plaque about that, and there probably should be. People were kept in that building, and it is now a place where people buy coffee.
