Balana Fort

Balana Fort occupied a commanding position above the old route into the Kandyan kingdom. Its name reflects its function as a lookout, while the pass below became central to repeated campaigns involving Sitawaka and European colonial forces. The remains visible today are modest: conserved foundations of the upper fort show a quadrangular plan with rounded bastion traces and a narrow eastern entrance. A lower line of defensive works survives in a more overgrown condition. The site is best understood through its terrain, where steep slopes and restricted approaches explain its military importance.
