The harbour was destroyed by the 2004 tsunami and rebuilt under a project called, plainly, the Awakening of Fishery Harbour.

THE PLACE
Beruwala Harbour is one of the main fishery harbours on Sri Lanka's western coast, on the southern edge of the Kalutara district, about 60 km south of Colombo. It provides berthing, refrigeration, and fuel facilities for fishing boats. The Ceylon Fisheries Corporation built it in 1965; the Ceylon Fishery Harbours Corporation has run it since 1972. The coastline it sits on had already been used by merchant vessels for centuries before the harbour existed.
The 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami destroyed the harbour. It was rebuilt afterward under the Ceylon Fishery Harbours Corporation's Awakening of Fishery Harbour project.

As at most working fishing harbours in Sri Lanka, activity peaks in the early morning when boats come in with the catch, and it's courteous to ask before photographing individual fishermen, their boats, or their catch up close.
