Colombo Galbokka Lighthouse

A tower of thirty-four metres at Galbokka Point, south of the Port of Colombo, built in 1952 and run by the Ports Authority. It stands a short walk from Galle Face Green along Chaitya Road. Since the port city was built, most of what it was looking at is no longer the view.

Sri Lanka has twenty-five lighthouses and sixteen still work. Nearly all were built under British rule and run by the Imperial Lighthouse Service, some with keepers sent out from Trinity House in London. After independence the Navy took them over in stages, finishing in 1976; today most are with the Ports Authority and the rest with the Navy.

A lighthouse from 1952 is a young one here, and it has already been built out of its own job.
