Commonwealth War Cemetery

Kandy War Cemetery, formerly called Pitakande Military Cemetery, is maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. Its graves commemorate Commonwealth service personnel from the Second World War, together with one Commonwealth burial from the First World War and several other burials. The formal rows of headstones, clipped lawns, flowering borders and central Cross of Sacrifice create a quiet contrast with the busy city beyond. This is a place of remembrance rather than a sightseeing stop, and visitors should move through it with appropriate respect.
