Doragamuwa Shylapabbatharama Tampita Viharaya

Doragamuwa Shylapabbatharama, also called Gale Pansala, is arranged across a rocky temple site with caves, a stupa and a raised Tampita image house. The image house stands on nine tall stone pillars and is largely concealed within a later preaching hall, so its raised form is not immediately obvious from outside. A wooden stair leads to the upper level. Inside are a seated Buddha facing west and wall paintings in the Kandyan tradition. Published accounts record fading paintings and incomplete conservation work, making careful behaviour especially important.
