THE PLACE
Galmaduwa Viharaya is an unusual unfinished shrine traditionally associated with King Kirti Sri Rajasinghe. A square stone-and-brick pavilion stands within a heavy enclosing wall, while a tall entrance tower gives the complex a strong South Indian architectural character. Cusped arches and the bare, unfinished sanctuary make it quite different from the painted image houses found at many Kandyan temples.

The monument is best examined in daylight when the masonry details are clear. Keep off fragile walls and ledges, and ask at the site before using tripods or photographing religious activity.
