THE PLACE
Walwasagoda Sri Kataragama Devalaya is dedicated to Skanda, also worshipped in Sri Lanka as Kataragama Deviyo. The shrine stands on elevated ground, with parts of the complex carried on rock foundations and pillars of granite and brick. Its architecture keeps a simple Kandyan character, still legible inside a devalaya that remains in active use.
Published accounts trace its construction to King Buwanekabahu IV of the Gampola period.
