Giragama Walawwa

Giragama Walawwa stands at the corner of Yatinuwara Veediya and Sir Bennet Soysa Veediya in central Kandy. Built in 1814, it is regarded as the city’s oldest surviving walawwa and was associated with Kudamudiyanse Giragama, a former Diyawadana Nilame. Its most unusual feature is the wooden central tower, a form not commonly found in other walawwas. The protected building was restored in work completed in 2015. Its busy urban surroundings make the survival of this domestic Kandyan landmark particularly striking.
