Ilupandeniya Raja Maha Viharaya

Ilupandeniya Raja Maha Viharaya has a long recorded connection with Buddhist learning. Temple tradition carries its beginnings back to the Anuradhapura period, while documentary references place it as a centre of learning during the reign of Queen Kalyanawathi in the early thirteenth century. A later record refers to a land grant during the reign of Vikramabahu III in the fourteenth century. The earliest origin remains a tradition rather than a firmly dated construction history.
