Kalotuwawa Purana Tampita Viharaya

Kalotuwawa Purana Tampita Viharaya, also called Kalotuwawa Kande Viharaya, occupies the rock plain at the top of a wooded hill. The raised image house stands on thirteen stone supports set on a prepared platform and has a narrow passage around its inner chamber. A wooden stair leads to carved doorways and a painted interior containing Buddha images and Kandyan religious scenes. The date 1898 on an outer door is thought to mark a renovation rather than the original construction. The image house and the raised monks’ residence are protected archaeological monuments.
