Kandewela Ambalama

Kandewela Ambalama is an open timber wayside pavilion in the farming country of Pathahewaheta, near Marassana in the Kandy District. Four large carved inner pillars carry the main roof structure, supported by twelve outer wooden posts. The inner beams are wide enough to double as seats, and the roof members are joined in the traditional Kanimadala manner, without iron nails.

The pavilion had fallen into serious disrepair before it was restored in 2005, when the decayed timber was replaced and the roof rebuilt and re-laid with Sinhala clay tiles. It sits about half a kilometre's walk from the road, reached on foot through paddy fields.
