Kevulgama Ganegala Ambalama

Kevulgama Ganegala Ambalama is a wayside rest shelter, an ambalama, in the rural Kevulgama area of the eastern Kandy highlands, Kandy District. Published detail on its date, builder and present condition is limited, and little further information about the structure itself has been found in available sources.

Ambalamas of this general kind were built as free shelters for travelers and pilgrims, a practice some sources trace to precedents from before 230 BC. Surviving examples are typically wooden structures kept standing through repeated repair, usually maintained by local families, and they appear as a recurring motif in the old Sinhala sandesha poems. What can be said of this particular one is narrower: it survives as a point on the older network of village routes that once crossed the eastern Kandy highlands.
