THE PLACE
Lankatilaka Rajamaha Viharaya rises above Hiyarapitiya on the broad rock plateau known as Panhalgala. The temple was built during the Gampola kingdom in the fourteenth century under King Bhuvanekabahu IV. Its tall brick image house combines Sri Lankan and South Indian architectural influences, while the interior preserves religious sculpture, decorative entrances and paintings from later periods.

The approach crosses exposed rock and includes steps. Visit in cooler hours, remove footwear where required and ask permission before photographing shrine interiors or paintings.
