Lewella Gangarama Raja Maha Viharaya

Lewella Gangarama Raja Maha Viharaya stands close to the Mahaweli River on the eastern side of Kandy. A rock inscription records work carried out under King Kirti Sri Rajasinghe in the eighteenth century, including a stone-walled image house built around an older stone Buddha image. The temple is particularly known for paintings in the Kandyan tradition, including scenes from the life of the Buddha and Jataka stories. Their age and religious setting make the image house the main reason for a careful visit.
