Madugalle Walawwa

Madugalle Walawwa stands in Udispattuwa, in the Nilgala area of Medadumbara. Its surviving domestic architecture belongs to the walawwa tradition of the Kandyan region, but no source gives a construction date or names who built it.

The house's name links it to the Madugalle family, though no source confirms that this particular building was the residence of any specific Madugalle family member. Madugalle (Udagabada) Nilame served as an official under King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe and was reappointed to office by the British governor in 1815. He turned against British rule, was imprisoned at Jaffna from September 1816 to August 1817, and afterward became one of the principal leaders of the Uva Rebellion of 1817-1818, commanding forces at Teldeniya. He was captured near Elahera on 2 November 1818 with the help of villagers and executed by beheading at Bogambara Lake, Kandy, on 26 November 1818. His estates were confiscated and his family dispersed to Kalutara and Colombo.
