THE PLACE

Thulhiriya Mangedara Tampita Viharaya Tempita Vihara (Temple on Pillars) is a unique type of image house found in some Buddhist temples in Sri Lanka. These buildings have a distinctive architectural design. In the 17th-19th century, these Tempita Viharas were a popular aspect of many Buddhist temples.

Thulhiriya Mangedara Tampita Viharaya is a small and cute Tampita Viharaya. The structure supported with nine granite pillars; the two rocks made out of rock will let you access the vihara entrance. The entrance painted with two guardian deities carrying a pot of plenty (Punkalasa) and a sword. Inside is complete with a single Samadhi Buddha statue.

The wall is painted with the disciples Sariyuth and Mugalan Maha theros worshipping Lord Buddha. Left of the wall would be the deity Saman and on the right, must be the deity Vishnu. On 22 November 2002, Mangedara Tampita Viharaya was declared as a protected archaeological site. The Tampita Vihara can be reached on Ambepussa – Kurunegala road or Ambepussa – Kandy road.
