Palkumbura Raja Maha Viharaya

Palkumbura Raja Maha Viharaya is associated with the Gampola kingdom and the reign of Buwanekabahu IV in the fourteenth century. Temple tradition records that the king’s son, Prince Jayaweera Astana, was educated here by the resident monk Pallekumbure Athnidassi Thero. The site is also noted for a small image house constructed from dressed stone, a form compared with the old stone shrine at Halloluwa. Later temple buildings surround these earlier features.
