Peradeniya Sangili Palama

Peradeniya Sangili Palama is a suspension footbridge across the Mahaweli Ganga, connecting the Royal Botanic Gardens, Peradeniya to Gannoruwa. It was built in 1931. The 127-metre deck hangs from steel cables carried by two pairs of steel pillars, each 9.5 metres high, and is narrow enough that two people can pass each other. Inside the Gardens it sits at the end of Royal Palm Avenue, about 1.2 kilometres from the entrance.

The deck moves as you cross it, bouncing and swaying more toward the centre of the span. Older sangili palama in Sri Lanka were built with heavy rope; this one, like other similar modern examples, uses steel cable and a wooden plank deck instead.
