Poramadulla Ambalama

Poramadulla Ambalama stands in Poramadulla town, in Kandy District, near the entrance arch of a local school. It is a square structure with half-height granite walls and four granite pillars at the corners, carrying a four-sided roof laid with Calicut tiles.

Accounts of its construction disagree. One record holds it was built on 30 April 1923 by a man named Nan Ediri. Another dates it to 1924 and credits an unnamed businessman.

Ambalamas like this one, built to shelter foot travelers through the Kandyan countryside, often doubled as village meeting places as well. Left unmaintained, it fell into serious decay before the Department of Archaeology carried out conservation work, completed in October 2023.
