THE PLACE

Tampita Vihara (Temple on Pillars) is a unique type of image house found in some Buddhist temples in Sri Lanka. These buildings have a distinctive architectural design. In the 17th-19th century, these Tampita Viharas were a popular aspect of many Buddhist temples.

Raddalgoda Sri Jinendrarama Purana Viharaya is also an ancient Temple hidden in the village of Mirigama and belongs to the Kandyan era This Tampita Viharaya was built on nine granite stumps of about 3 feet in height. The structure is 8 feet in length and 6 feet in width. The 1.5 feet circular path around the inner chamber of the Tampita Vihara is decorated with a wooden handrail carved with a Beralu design. The roof is clad with flat clay tiles. A short beautiful wooden stairway takes you up to the Vihara Ge. with two painted guard figures at the entrance. A single seated Buddha statue is found inside the chamber Unfortunately, murals on the walls are no longer visible and are entirely disappeared.

The Vihara is located on the Pasyala – Mirigama Road. Take the road to the left, Gaspe Road, travel just 300 km, and then take the narrow concrete paved Pansala Para road to the left again. The Vihar is found 700 meters down this road.
