THE PLACE

Rahas Ella is formed by a stream descending from the Hunnasgiriya range towards Wattegama. The waterfall drops in two sections through a wooded setting and measures about fifteen metres in total. A deep cleft at the base makes the immediate fall area hazardous, particularly after rain. The surrounding forest has ecological value but has also been affected by clearance and erosion. Local stories connect the waterfall and nearby Wavulugala cave with Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe; these belong to oral tradition rather than confirmed archaeological history.

THE PHOTOGRAPHER'S NOTES

Approach from Wattegama and obtain current local directions. Keep away from the deep cleft and wet rock edges, and do not treat the pool immediately below the falls as a safe bathing place.
