THE PLACE

The ancient historic Viharaya is beautifully situated on top of a hill in Thalagama village, close to Warakapola. The nearest railway station is just a kilometre away and is the Ambepussa Railway station. It is said that this Vihara was built during the King Walagamba period. The Cel Lipi (stones scripts) found at the Vihara confirms how vital this Vihara was during his era. five caves are located on the premises The temple consists of three levels.

The Sangawasaya (Monks Residence), Dharma Shalawa (Preaching Hall), and other general buildings used today by the bhikkus are lower. The Viharage and the Bodhi (sacred Bo tree) is located at the second level. one can view the Sri Pada from the second level. A Gal kema (rock-based pond) along with a Sel Lipi (Stone inscription) can be found on the third level. This Vihara had been in existence when Arahath Mahinda visited Sri Lanka 2000 years ago. According to folk law, The Bo tree found on the second level is a sapling of the great Siri Mahabodiya in Anuradhapura and is about 1500 years old. It is also worth mentioning that the stupa found on the upper level is the only stupa located in Sri Lanka related to Sanchi Stupa found in India.

The stupa was build in 1942 with the guidance of Mr Senarth Paranavitha, the eminent archaeologist. Today The vihara premises is a protected site by the department of archaeology.
