A tank and a stupa built together in the fourth century, on the theory that a village needs both.

THE PLACE

Topawawa was built by King Upatissa I in the 4th century. This comes close to the concept of 'tank and stupa' The word 'topaz derives from the word 'that. Actually, there are ruins of a stupa connected with the tank that shows the Mahayana influence. The five Buddha Mandala that symbolises the Dharmakaya was found in the relic chamber of the stupa. The tank was built by King Upatissa I, but the builder of the stupa is not known.

Close to the Nissankamalla palace complex is the Dipuyyana. It may have been a summer palace built by King Nissankamalla in place of Parakramabahu's summer palace. At present, the ruins are overgrown with jungle.
