The Victoria Dam and the Reservoir

Victoria Dam spans the Mahaweli River near Teldeniya and forms the wide Victoria Reservoir. Completed as part of the Mahaweli development programme, the concrete double-curvature arch dam rises dramatically between steep, forested slopes. Water from the reservoir supports hydroelectric generation as well as the wider water-management scheme. The scale of the structure is best appreciated from authorised viewpoints, where the curved crest and reservoir can be read together.
