Theldeniya Karalliyadda Ambalama

Karalliyadda Ambalama is a compact timber wayside pavilion in the Theldeniya area, raised on a rubble stone foundation about 358 by 403 centimetres and about one and a half feet high. Four large wooden beams rest on corner stones that also serve as seats, and four plain wooden pillars are square at the base and octagonal further up. The roof keeps its original flat clay tiles from the Kandy period, and the rafters carry carved gona motifs, stylized animal horns worked into the timber.

No record gives the pavilion a date more precise than that Kandy-period roofing, and no builder or patron is named. It was declared a protected archaeological monument by gazette notification in 2013, and re-gazetted in 2022. Modern houses now crowd the site, but the raised open form still reads as a village rest.

The name may preserve an older place: before the town of Teldeniya grew up around it, a smaller village here was called Karalliyadda, and some locals still use that name.
