Ulapane Mawatura Gal Viharaya

Ulapane Mawatura Gal Viharaya preserves an unfinished stone building within a temple away from the better-known visitor routes. Architectural comparisons associate the remains with the Gampola period, between 1341 and 1415. The planned image house was substantial, measuring approximately 35.6 by 26.6 metres, with its entrance facing south. What survives is important precisely because it is incomplete: the masonry gives a view of an ambitious religious structure that was begun but never brought to its intended form. Published assessments also note that the monument has received limited protection.
