Unambuwa Purana Tampita Viharaya

Unambuwa Purana Tampita Viharaya stands in an old village near Gampola. Its raised shrine forms the rear portion of a larger building, with an inner chamber carried on about eighteen supports above a kabook-block platform. The site belongs to the Kandyan Tampita tradition, in which the sacred chamber is lifted above ground on a timber platform. The shrine was declared a protected archaeological monument in 2006. Access is by a narrow, winding road followed by steps, and the inner chamber may not always be open; visitors should treat access as something to confirm rather than assume.
