When the Western colonists arrived in Sri Lanka (then Ceylon), they brought with them their own designs and characteristics, soon establishing their own form of architecture in this island. It is evident in the style of architecture of each period and its influence on modern day construction.

Today, very few buildings of the Portuguese era survives yet, many beautiful designs of Dutch origin from that era can be found on the coastal lines of the island. Galle and its fortifications of the year 1663, built by the Dutch, make up a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Many historic buildings that include old churches of spectacular architecture, can be found in many Sri Lankan cities and towns. Some are off the beaten track and are most interesting to discover.
